What Is iTunes Match?

This new service from Apple will serve to make all your ripped CD’s, converted vinyls, and other non-iTunes music available to you to access from all of your iDevices without having to store a local copy. One of the lingering questions surrounding iTunes Match is exactly how it will handle content not available from the iTunes store. In the WWDC Keynote, it was mentioned that it would scan your library and attempt to match your music, and then upload the remainder to iCloud.

Here’s how it works: iTunes determines which songs in your collection are available in the iTunes Store. Any music with a match is automatically added to iCloud for you to listen to anytime, on any device. Since there are more than 20 million songs in the iTunes Store, chances are, your music is already in iCloud. And for the few songs that aren’t, iTunes has to upload only what it can’t match. Which is much faster than starting from scratch. Once your music is in iCloud, you can stream and store it to any of your devices. Even better, all the music iTunes matches plays back from iCloud at 256-Kbps AAC DRM-free quality — even if your original copy was of lower quality.
How Does It Work?

iTunes Match works by scanning your iTunes library and determining what is and is not available in the iTunes Store. Any music that is matched will be automatically added to your iCloud library for access anywhere, and most of your music is probably already in iCloud. iTunes will then provide high-quality 256Kbps quality matched files to fill your library with.
Who Can Sign Up?

iTunes Match is a U.S.-only service for the time being, although the company is working hard to expand availability to other countries. Apple has begun updating the iTunes Store to reflect availability of the new service.
iTunes Match is a Beta Service

It’s also worth noting that iTunes Match is still considered a beta service, and Apple may still periodically delete iTunes Match libraries as the company continues to optimize the service. It’s important to keep a current backup of your iTunes library if you plan on subscribing right away.
How To Get Started

To sign up for iTunes Match, you must have the latest version of iTunes (10.5.1). Launch iTunes and sign in with your Apple ID, then select “Store” from the menu bar, select “Turn On iTunes Match” and follow the prompts – that’s all there is to it! Once you’ve sign up, iTunes Match will automatically scan your library, which can take a few hours. Once finished, you’re ready to go, and can access your entire iTunes library from any Mac or iOS device linked to your Apple ID.

To enable iTunes Match on your iOS 5 device, simply tap Settings > Music > turn iTunes Match ON. This will disable your device from automatically syncing from iTunes. Also, once enabled, deleting a song on your device will also delete it from iCloud.
